Opinions (posted Monday, October 31 2005) I think it is best to begin this site by giving a broad overview of what I believe; a statement of faith, if you will. I won't be including scriptures as backup in this post as it is already going to be quite long. And besides, many of these topics will be showing up in the coming weeks and months and will contain plenty of reasoning, scriptural backup, and explanation. When quoting scriptures in the future, I will generally use the NIV version unless stated otherwise.
I am a non-denominational Protestant Christian. In short: I believe that the Bible is the inspired word from God. I believe that God is a Trinity of equal personalities: the Father, who planned and is sovereign over all things; the Son, who executed the plan and came to Earth as our Saviour; and the Spirit who empowers and reveals to us all things. I believe that we are saved simply by believing in the saving work of Christ, and that after salvation we are to learn about God through Bible study and live the Spirit-filled life by walking in Faith.
- The Trinity - that God is one in essence but three in distinct personality, co-equal and co-eternal. The titles Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are a means of explaining to us the roles that they play: the Father is the planner, the Son is the executor, the Holy Spirit is the teacher.
- Jesus Christ - The union of perfect God (the Son) with true humanity. The unique person who was able to be born without sin, live on earth, fulfill the law, and pay for God's wrath against sin on the Cross. Because He did all the work, we need only believe on Him and we will be saved.
- Satan - a literal being who was once the highest angel in God's creation but fell through pride. Satan is currently the king of this world and is trying to become like God.
- Salvation - a person is saved by faith in Christ. God did all the work and man received all the benefit. Doing any "good deeds" to try and buy one's way into heaven is totally false. Salvation is permanent, and one can never lose salvation.
- Grace - the expression of God's perfect essence by giving to us when we deserve nothing, because of His infinite love for us. Grace is the main theme of God's plan for His people today.
- Sin - there are two parts to sin: first, the nature of sin which we all receive by being born (also called "Original Sin", the "old man", the "flesh", etc); and second, the individual acts of sin (gossip, murder, lying, etc) which we commit because of our flawed nature.
- Confession - the act of admitting our sins to God, who then cleanses us of all unrighteousness. By confessing sin, we are restored to fellowship with God in time and can perform divine good and learn spiritual truth.
- The Bible - a collection of writings spanning 2000 years, which were inspired by the Holy Spirit to communicate to us everything that we need to know about God in our time. Some parts of the Bible are literal and some are figurative, and by careful study of language and comparing scripture with scripture, these things can be learned.
- Bible Doctrine - the sum total of what God thinks about a topic. The "doctrine of heaven", for instance, would refer to everything which God has revealed to us about heaven and what we can learn about it.
- The Mosaic Law - God's plan for the nation of Israel from Moses until the law was fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The Law is not just the 10 commandments, but much of the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Now that the Messiah has come and fulfilled it, the Law is no longer God's plan for His people.
- Angels - a race of beings created by God before humans. When Satan rebelled, some angels chose to follow him (fallen angels, or demons). Others remained with God (elect angels).
I will update this list and probably place a perma-link to it on this page so that anyone can refer to it easily at any time, but for right now this should do.
